Gate Installation and Replacement in Quincy
We supply and fit new driveway gates and replace old ones that are past repair: single and double swing gates, sliding gates and walk-through gates, in wrought iron, aluminum and wood. A new gate can be manual, automatic from the start, or hung so an opener can be added later.
The right gate depends less on looks than on the site. How much room there is behind the opening, whether the driveway slopes, how wide the opening is and how many cars use it each day decide between swing and slide, and between a light gate and a heavy one. The guide below walks through those questions.
Gate Styles Compared
| Gate style | Best suited to | Things to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Single swing gate | Narrower drives with level ground behind the opening | Needs the full leaf width clear to swing; one wide leaf is heavy on its hinges |
| Double swing gate | Wide driveways with room on both sides | Each leaf is lighter; the two must meet and latch evenly |
| Sliding gate | Short, steep or busy driveways with a straight run to one side | Needs a level run at least the gate’s length, and a clear track |
| Walk-through gate | A path beside the driveway gate | Often matched to the main gate; can take its own latch or keypad |
| Wrought iron | A traditional look and strength | Heavy: posts, hinges and openers must be sized for it; steel needs rust protection |
| Aluminum | A light gate that will not rust | Easy on hinges and openers; looks similar to iron from the street |
| Wood | Privacy and a solid face | Heavy when solid, and moves with the seasons, so the frame matters |
What We Need to Know About the Site
Site details to gather
- The width of the opening, at the ground and at the top of the posts
- The height of gate you have in mind
- Whether the driveway slopes up or down from the gate
- The room behind the opening (swing) or beside it (slide)
- Whether the posts are staying or being replaced
- Where power could come from, if the gate will be automatic
- How many vehicles use the gate each day
- Any rules from the town or a homeowners’ association
Caleb measures and checks all of this in person before a start date is set. Post holes in Massachusetts need a Dig Safe (811) call first, so underground lines are marked before digging; our process page covers this and the other rules that apply.
